Hoka Tor Ultra hi
A slumbering behemoth has been awoken. The Tor Ultra Hi, HOKA’s cult favourite hiking boot, is back and better than ever. Up to this point, the Tor Ultra Hi has been somewhat of a unicorn in the admittedly niche world of fashion-forward trail footwear. Beginning its life as the product of a 2018 collab between HOKA and the dons at Engineered Garments, the original Tor Ultra models sold out almost instantly and have been on many grail-seekers’ wishlists ever since. Now, the covetable sneaker-boot makes its triumphant return, replete with all the latest HOKA tech and subtle updates that make the Tor Ultra Hi the now and future champion of the street smart, trail-ready boot game.
In nearly every sense, the re-released Tor Ultra Hi is a direct echo of the original – and thank goodness for that. HOKA has staked their name on supportive, high-performance footwear and you’d be hard-pressed to find a better example of that than this rugged yet stylish stomper. The Tor Ultra Hi features the same larger-than-life midsole that’s built to withstand hundred-mile ultramarathons, alongside their signature Meta-Rocker technology to encourage and support your natural gait. All the other HOKA hallmarks are here too, such as a wide geometric footbed and their J-Frame heel support system, alongside more outdoorsy additions like a Sierra Buck leather and mesh upper and a rubber toe cap.

HOKA co-founders Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard met during their time at Salomon, so while the brand’s running gear may see a larger share of the limelight, their deep ties to the trail are beyond question. Hard-wearing hiking functionality is everywhere in the revamped Tor Ultra, most notably in the newly added GORE-TEX® liner, which has replaced the original model’s eVent lining for even better waterproofing ability. Padding is plentiful all the way up the ankle, securely locking in the foot with a lengthened lace system that’ll stay put over any amount of distance. The Tor Ultra rounds out its impressive array of offerings with a Vibram Megagrip outsole – the gold standard for terrain traction and stability on any terrain. All this, in just over 18 ounces of shoe.

Hoka Tor Ultra Hi Black/Black
The Tor Ultra may be maximalist in shape and functionality, but the reimagined tonal colourways are blissfully simple in appearance. The ‘Oatmeal’ iteration utilises a pleasing beige palette with mesh panelling and printed HOKA branding emblazoned on the mid-panel. We never get bored of all-black, and the Tor is an absolute masterclass on how to liven up a monochromatic shoe. Textures abound throughout, with subtle detailing on the tongue and panel linings and a blacked-out outsole that resembles the tread on mudding tires. Whether all-black or all-beige, these rugged boot lets the tech shine through and keep everything else nice and simple. The Tor Ultra Hi is an ode to hiking on your own terms – giving you all the tools you need to blaze new trails in a deceptively lightweight, undeniably appealing package.
