Kaptain Sunshine's relaxed remixes of vintage styles exude an easy charm that's hard to replicate. The Denim Tracker Jacket, not to be confused with a trucker jacket, is a boxy-fitting beauty of a mid-weight denim jacket, utilizing a 13.5oz deadstock selvedge denim that's been washed once to kickstart the aging process and prevent shrinkage. Dyed with natural indigo, the fabric is weaved slowly to create a natural nep, which gives the piece a unique texture over time as individual cotton fibers reveal themselves. The fit is really the centrepiece of the Denim Tracker Jacket though, lending some seriously chill vibes to any fit – complemented by contrast stitching across the chest and angled flap pockets on the jacket's front.
Kaptain Sunshine's latest FW22 collection is comprised of supremely comfortable winter staples, reimagined with the label's laid-back worldview and careful attention to sourcing and fit. Tried-and-true outwear styles are given a new lease on life in the form of the Denim Tracker Jacket and the reversible Mont Blanc Down Puffer Jacket, both of which are made to pair great with equally adaptable pants like the 35 Backleback Baker Pants, a slouchy pair of selvedge denim, as well as the drapey, easy-wearing Gurkha Trousers in versatile grey. The dual threat from this collection though are the two Brushed Wool pieces – the Brushed Wool Mohair Cardigan, and the Brushed Wool Mohair Crewneck Pullover. Both available in a rich emerald green, these two beauties are guaranteed to add cozy elegance and vibrant colour to any wardrobe.
A Japanese label producing high-quality takes on archival Americana staples isn’t exactly newsworthy at this point, but trust us – you’ll want to pay attention to what the folks at Kaptain Sunshine are up to. Rather than producing exact replicas and reproductions, Kaptain Sunshine injects elements of designer Shinsuke Kojima’s own style into each piece the brand produces. The silhouettes are largely borrowed from vintage workwear and military & naval gear, but it’s difficult to put one’s finger on the exact time-period any garment hails from since the past is used more as a jumping-off point than an exact template. To put it plainly, Kaptain Sunshine produces riffs, not covers. Learn more...
