Wallace Selects: Transitional Jackets
September can be a difficult month to dress for. It’s no longer hot enough for shorts and tshirts, but it’s not quite sweater weather either. Allow us to present the official Wallace solution to this quandary: the transitional jacket.
One of mankind’s greatest sartorial inventions, the
transitional jacket offers breathability on sunny fall afternoons and warmth on chilly evenings,
all while looking miles sharper than your average flannel shirt. When the weather doesn’t seem
to know what season it is, we appreciate a versatile outer layer.
This past season we’ve assembled quite the collection of transitional jackets, so let’s take a
survey of some shop favourites (and don’t forget, they’re all on sale!). It’s no secret that we’re
fans of military- and workwear-inspired outerwear, and the Goldwin Traveler Blouson, Kestin
Ambleside Parka, and Albam Twill Carpenters Jacket scratch that itch. The Garbstore Field
Jacket has a similar vibe, but comes in a unique slate grey colour and is constructed from
Japanese Cordura fabric—it kind of looks like workwear from the future. For the minimalists out
there, we have the Snow Peak 2L Octa Jacket and Schnayderman’s Zipshirt. We like the Octa
jacket for rainy days thanks to its waterproof fabric, while the Zipshirt’s cotton-linen blend is
perfect for hot September afternoons. Rounding out this selection are the Schnayderman’s
Denim Jacket Double-Dyed and the Reception Pop Over in multicolour stripes, two colourful
jackets that are not for the faint of heart. In our Schnayderman’s SS20 blog post, we described
the Denim Jacket Double-Dyed’s colour as “turmeric-meets-automotive-grease”. We still think
that’s an accurate assessment. As for the Pop Over, it’s a perfect example of what Reception
does well: have fun.
