A Kind of Guise: A Journey Through the Pyrenees

We are pleased to welcome A Kind of Guise to Wallace Mercantile for Fall/Winter 2026.

Founded in Munich in 2009 by Yasar Ceviker and Susi Streich, A Kind of Guise began as a student project and grew into one of Germany’s most quietly distinctive independent labels. Its approach is grounded in a simple principle: create thoughtful, enduring clothing from exceptional materials and make it as close to home as possible.

Rather than chasing novelty, the label concentrates on the elements that give clothing lasting value—fabric, construction, proportion and detail. The results feel contemporary without being tied to a particular moment: relaxed tailoring, expressive textiles and practical silhouettes designed to become familiar parts of daily life.

Clothing Before Fashion

A Kind of Guise prefers to talk about clothing rather than fashion. In an interview, Ceviker explained that the brand does not set out to follow major trends. Its focus remains on quality, fabric and the manufacturing process, with the goal of creating timeless pieces distinguished by a subtle design twist.

That philosophy can be seen in the label’s careful production. A Kind of Guise works with specialist makers in Germany and family-run manufacturers in Northern Italy, bringing together traditional expertise and a modern design sensibility. Fabrics are selected not only for their immediate appearance, but also for their handle, durability and ability to develop character through wear.

The brand describes its guiding principle as “Quality Over Quantity.” It is a phrase that feels less like a slogan than a summary of how the clothes are made: deliberately, in considered quantities and with an emphasis on longevity.

Along the road, everyday places become part of the journey.

A Wearable Travelogue

Travel has shaped A Kind of Guise from the beginning. Each seasonal collection looks closely at a particular place or culture, drawing inspiration from its landscape, food, craft, architecture and daily rituals.

Past journeys have taken the brand from Ghana and Colombia to Jordan, Iceland, Mongolia and Sri Lanka. These references rarely appear as literal reproductions. Instead, they surface through colour, texture, pattern and small construction details. The intention is to translate the atmosphere of a place into clothing rather than turn it into costume.

The accompanying editorials are photographed within the communities and landscapes that inspire each collection. This approach gives the clothing a genuine sense of place while reflecting the brand’s broader interest in cultural exchange, curiosity and connection.

For A Kind of Guise, the journey is not simply a backdrop to the finished clothes. It is part of the design process itself.

Fall/Winter 2026: Sombra de la Sierra

The FW26 collection, titled Sombra de la Sierra, takes us into the Spanish Pyrenees—a region of mountain pastures, glacial terrain, stone villages and dry valleys where the landscape can change dramatically within a matter of hours.

The title translates as “Shadow of the Mountain Range,” evoking both the physical presence of the Pyrenees and the lives, traditions and forms of knowledge sheltered within them. During its journey, the A Kind of Guise team spent time with farmers, winemakers, restaurateurs and craftspeople. Their patient, practical approach to making became an important part of the collection’s character.

That influence appears in the meeting of seemingly opposing elements: rugged wool and fine tailoring, utility and ceremony, mountain clothing and more refined forms of dress. The contrasts feel natural rather than forced. Each piece reflects a world in which beauty often begins with usefulness and objects are expected to serve their purpose for many years.

Rich materials and tactile surfaces give FW26 its depth. Wool trousers, substantial overshirts, patterned shirting, knitwear and protective outerwear build a wardrobe suited to changing temperatures and layered dressing. Relaxed forms are balanced by precise construction, while earthy, mineral and shadowed tones recall the varied terrain of the Pyrenees.

Symbols Carried Forward

Print and embroidery introduce another layer of storytelling. The collection’s Derbin Shirt appears in three exclusive designs developed in the A Kind of Guise studio: Blue Coins, Light Vase Theory and Black Swords.

Each pattern begins with an object or idea connected to Spain and the Pyrenees. Ancient currencies and mountain trade routes inform Blue Coins. Light Vase Theory considers the relationship between utility, form and illumination. Black Swords draws from the imaginative world of Don Quixote, transforming the romance of chivalry and adventure into an embroidered motif.

The references are historical, but their expression is unmistakably contemporary. Printed Italian silk, substantial woven cotton and soft embroidered flannel allow each design to carry its story through texture as well as image.
